Shower Water, Skin & Hair
Why the same soap behaves differently in different houses, and what actually causes tight skin and dull hair.
Shower water is judged almost entirely on hardness, and the effects are real rather than imagined. In hard water, soap reacts with dissolved calcium and magnesium to form an insoluble residue, the classic soap scum, which does not rinse away cleanly. It stays on skin and hair, which is what produces that tight, filmy feeling and hair that looks dull and feels coated.
Soft water behaves the opposite way and confuses people just as much. Soap lathers readily and rinses slowly, leaving a slippery sensation that many first-time softener owners describe as never feeling rinsed off. Nothing is wrong; that slipperiness is what skin feels like without a soap residue on it.
Chlorine is the second factor. At normal municipal levels it is safe, but it is drying, and people with eczema, sensitive skin or colour-treated hair often notice the difference when it is filtered out.
Worth being clear about what shower water does not do: it is not a meaningful route of exposure for the health parameters in this section. Nitrate matters because it is swallowed. Showering in it is not the concern.
The numbers that decide it
Common questions
Does hard water cause dry skin?
It contributes. Hard water prevents soap rinsing cleanly, leaving a residue that can irritate and dry the skin, and studies have found associations between hard water and eczema severity in children. It is not the sole cause of dry skin, but it makes it harder to manage.
Are shower filters worth it?
For chlorine, yes: a carbon shower filter reduces it effectively and many people with sensitive skin notice the difference. For hardness, mostly no: shower-head filters cannot meaningfully soften water at that flow rate, and claims otherwise should be treated sceptically. Softening is a whole-house job.
Why does my skin feel slippery with soft water?
Because there is no soap scum left on it. In hard water, soap combines with calcium to form a residue that makes skin feel squeaky. Soft water rinses that away completely, and the slippery feeling is your skin's natural surface.
